Kraft paper for sacks and bags
After many years of lowering demand, flexible paper packaging has become increasingly popular as end-users want more sustainable packaging. Today, consumers, communities, and governments aim to abandon disposable plastic products, such as straws, bags, disposable tableware. That is why most businesses are choosing paper products as environmentally friendly alternatives. A 2020 European consumer survey, for example, has shown that 62% of consumers believe that paper and cardboard packaging is more environmentally friendly. Besides, 70% of consumers surveyed stated that they themselves take action to reduce the use of plastic packaging.
Although the production of paper packaging also affects the environment, the impact is much smaller than plastic packaging production. Besides, paper, unlike plastic, is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, made from renewable resources, is much easier to decompose and recycle.
According to various studies, only about 9 % of all plastic packaging is recycled (of all plastic bags - only 3%), 12% is burned, and the remaining 79% enters a landfill, where, depending on the conditions, it will be breaking down from several hundred to thousands of years, or it gets into the environment, groundwater and oceans, where its damage is difficult even to evaluate. Two-thirds of paper and paper packaging is recycled each year, i.e., about 66 %. To better understand the extent of pollution, it is also necessary to consider that flexible plastic packaging accounts for 93% of all manufactured packaging, and paper - only 5%.
